Today I present the tiny House Wren. What he lacks in size he makes up for in ruthless determination.
This beastly little marauder likes to take over other bird nests and poke holes in other species eggs to drive them away. The males are known to woo a new mate while their first is still on her eggs. They’ll even destroy the eggs of competing males and steal their mates!
The common House Wren, or
Troglodytes aedon, translates roughly as “crevice-dwelling nightingale,” was named after a child-killer—Aëdon, the Queen of Thebes, who in Greek mythology accidentally killed her own child while aiming for the son of a rival, and was then transformed by Zeus into a nightingale. The wren got this name BEFORE anyone knew he was a baby killer... Competition is fierce among crevice dwelling birds so we really shouldn’t judge this little guy, he’s just trying to survive.
They’ll build a nest in any cozy spot so be extra careful when you’re watering your hanging...
Putting the fun in Fine Art! Welcome to my collection of whimsical art. I’m a lifelong artist, and no matter what style or subject I attempt, it always seems to have a bit of humor in it. I primarily work with acrylic paints and sculpting clay to create works of art you’re not likely to see anywhere else. I often do commission work, especially animal portraits, so drop me a message if you have an idea for a portrait. Enjoy browsing my collection here on “Fine Art America”. Commissioning your own painting with me is super easy. Why not surprise a loved one with an original portrait of a pet? Prices for an original painting created to your specifications start at $100. All paintings are museum-quality work, no matter the size....
